HAT MONTHLY MEETING: Sat Feb 18, 1:30-3pm, Frank O'Hara and the Family Council

HAT MONTHLY MEETING
DATE: Saturday, February 18, 2012
1:30 – 3 pm
LOCATION:  Room 5-150, OISE, 252 Bloor St. West
PRESENTER: Frank O’Hara,
TOPIC:  “The Family Council: Advocating for Families affected by Addictions and Mental Illness”

Frank has been a long-standing member of HAT and a member of the steering committee.  When he beganhis retirement, he employed his entrepreneurial skills, energy, and imagination by volunteering as a business consultant and website developer for small and medium size enterprises in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Russia, SE Asia, China, South America, and the Caribbean as well as in Canada with Aboriginal Canadians.
These days, Frank is sticking closer to home as a volunteer. He is past president of The Family Council. This organization, funded by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, supports and advocates for families affected by addictions or mental illness. Frank also mentors new immigrants from French-speaking countries to help them find employment, which also supports his hobby to increase his fluency in French. Frank was one of just 19 recipients of the 2011 Ontario Senior Achievement Award, given to individuals for contributions to the community after the age of 65. For fun, he sings with several instrumentalists performing, for the most part, at retirement residences.
Speaking from personal experience as a volunteer at The Family Council, and backed up by a PowerPoint/video presentation, Frank shares his understanding of the challenges faced by people with mental health issues and the work that the Council does to help those people and their families
