HAT Monthly Speaker, May 12, 1:30-3pm OISE

HAT Monthly Speaker - Gail McCabe

"Towards an Inclusive Interpretation of Creed”

Date: Saturday May 12, 2012
Time: 1.30pm- 3.00pm

Location:OISE, 252 Bloor west, Room 2-214

The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) currently interprets the word “creed” to apply to religious institutions and excludes the “secular, moral or ethical beliefs” that make up the lived creed of humanists and other similar marginalized groups. However, the root definition of “creed,” i.e., a set of beliefs that expresses a particular opinion and influences the way you live (Cambridge University Press dictionary), makes no reference to religion and suggests only a substantial belief system. Humanists do in fact have a belief system based on ethics, reason, critical thinking and support for universal human rights. This paper, "Towards an Inclusive Interpretation of Creed,” was presented at the Policy Dialogue on Creed, Freedom of Religion and Human Rights, a joint project of the OHRC and the University of Toronto. We anticipate a lively discussion following Gail’s presentation.
